IT as a force for good – Security in your digital workspace

January 11, 2019 Frederiek Vanhoornick 0

How technology can help against accidental data leakage?   This week an article caught my attention: Somebody was able to steal an external disk. This disk contained backup data of autopsy reports related to the bombing on March 22th, 2016.  https://www.expatica.com/be/news/autopsy-reports-from-brussels-attacks-stolen-official-92660/   So, for me a  couple of questions raised instantly! How is it possible that he can just enter the office? How is it possible that the doctor could save sensitive data to a personal/external disk? Both questions are about security! The first one could be solved just by installing badge readers at the door and an automatic lock And off course some common sense by just closing the door 🙂 The second question is more up my alley […]

VSAN: Stretched Cluster Failure Scenarios explained

January 7, 2019 Stijn Depril 1

One of the most interesting features of VSAN, is the stretched cluster capability. It is safe to say, when we first introduced the stretched cluster capability, it wasn’t 100% ready. Sure, it worked, but it needed some improvements. Meanwhile we have made several improvements and have extended the stretched cluster feature set and it is now fully functioning & enterprise ready. Of course, with great claims come great responsibilities. So because we are always dealing with customer data, I always have a conversation with the customer about the actual expectations. This is especially the case if the client is thinking about using enterprise features such as stretched clustering.  Some customers have a very good understanding of business continuity others are not […]

5V0-31.19: VMware Cloud on AWS Management Exam 2019 – Study tips and my notes

January 6, 2019 Manny Sidhu 4

This test had been in my sights for some time, moreso after Graham Barker posted about it last year. I was pretty flat out at work when he made his passing the exam post here and decided to knock it out within the first week of the new year. More importantly, I’m going to deal with VMConAWS this year at my new job, it made even more sense to skill up. So I took the test this morning and passed. I never brag, it only took me about 3 hours of study, most of which was around (and this builds upon Graham’s post): what was where within the SDDC console in VMConAWS billing and consolidation in VMConAWS interoperability and management of […]

Exporting vROps reports continuously using PowerShell

January 5, 2019 Kim Bottu 3

You may come across situations where it makes sense to export vROps reports (continuously) using PowerShell instead of using the build in solutions. There is a very good blog article about how to leverage PowerCLI to extract vROps reports, which you can find here. A huge thanks to @_ryanjan_ for sharing this information and to create and share the excellent helper-module. However, when trying to do export reports using PowerShell, I faced some problems: The report id changes, so we need a variable for that. The exported report must change name each time it is being exported, or any following export will try to use the same name of the report that is already there. This is especially needed when […]

Create an alert for a failed vRO workflow in vRealize Operations Manager

January 3, 2019 Kim Bottu 0

How do you create an alert for a failed vRO workflow in vRealize Operations Manager? You might have noticed when you want to create an alert in vROps for a vRealize Orchestrator workflow,  thatout of the box alerts for vRO workflows simply do not exist in vROps. However, should you have installed the content pack for vRealize Orchestrator, you might have seen that workflow executions and failures are displayed in Log Insight. Aha moment! Let’s integrate vRLI with vROps! Requirements: vROps vRLI Content Pack for vROps in vRLI vRealize Orchestrator First steps Make sure your appliances have been properly configured. So this means that you have to integrate vCenter, vRLI and vROps with eachother. Plenty of guides around to do just […]

How VMware Certifications changed my life

December 30, 2018 Graeme Vermeulen 1

Manny’s latest post really hit home for me, so I thought I would write one describing how VMware certification changed my life too!  I remember standing in New York at the end of 2013 looking at a poster in the subway, thinking “man, that’s the future”. It was a VMware poster, and although I had worked with VMware all that year (and a little bit in 2012), that’s when it really hit me. I was in the US for a 6-week project, delivering thousands of desktops (with the help of good ol’ SCCM) for a FTSE 100 company. With me, a fellow consultant and a project manager. It was one of the best projects of my life – despite being […]

How the VCIX-NV changed my career and life

December 4, 2018 Manny Sidhu 0

About two and a half years ago, I used to be in a VCDX prep Slack group comprising of the likes of Grant Orchard, Niraj Naidu, Anthony Spiteri, Tim Williams, Craig Waters, Jeff Wong and a few others. In those days, I was looking for a study group to join to work towards the VCDX. I happened to talk to Craig about it and he suggested I join this Slack group he was a part of. After the introductory banter by the guys already in the group, I settled in and began spending some time towards the VCDX. Back then, NSX was a relatively new thing, at least in Australia it was, and Anthony was working towards his VCIX certification. […]
